1º Simposio Latino Americano de Canola

August 19 to 21, 2014
Centro Cultural Notre Dame Menino Jesus, Passo Fundo, RS, Brazil

Foreword

Contemporary agriculture, in addition to the classical rule to provide food to humans, livestock, and pets also contributes to fiber production and supply of raw material for various industrial uses. More recently, with the advent of biofuels, agriculture has assumed a new role in renewable energy production.

In this context, canola an oilseed species, has the traits to match all the requirements of the new agriculture. Canola cultivation is  relatively recent in South America. In Brazil, it is an important crop for the grain production systems. For the Southern Cone countries of South America   ̶ Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile  ̶ canola is not grown during the summer, therefore, it can be inserted into rotation schemes with winter crops, bringing proven benefits already observed in countries with a tradition of cultivation of this brassicacea, like some members of the European Union, Canada and Australia.

In Brazil, initiatives for promoting rapeseed cultivation were made during the mid-1970’s by public and private institutions. At Embrapa Wheat, canola was  formally inserted  in the scope of its institutional mission during the implementation of its IV Strategic Plan, for the period 2008 - 2011 -  2023. Presently, significant efforts in research, development and innovation have been allocated to make canola an economically sustainable alternative to Brazilian agriculture.

Finally, we feel honored to present the 1st Canola Latin American Symposium (SLAC 2014) and at the same time we see it as the culmination of the work carried out under the leadership of Dr. Gilberto Omar Tomm, that has achieved ramifications beyond the national borders. Thanks to all - keynote speakers, participants, organization team and sponsors - for the excellent work. We are sure that the seeds, here planted, will bear superb fruits, to take place in the upcoming symposia happening in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay or Uruguay.
