Abstract

In the North of the state of Paraná canola has been sown from the end of April to early June employing short cycle genotypes whereas those with longer cycle tend to display higher yield potential. The choice of seeding time, and the cycle length of the genotype that will be sown are decisive factors on grain yield and for the crop to fit in the cropping system. This study aimed at identifying the best sowing time for the region of Maringá, North of the state of Paraná, and to generate information for testing the hypothesis that the combination of seeding earlier and employing hybrids with intermediate cycle contributes to improve grain yields in this region. Seeding by the end of March led to higher canola grain yield than those later seeding dates. In addition, grain yield of short and intermediate cycle hybrids did not differ in the year 2009, in Maringá, state of Paraná, Brazil.
