Abstract

The behavior observation about crop evolution in terms of magnitude and location and the study of the reasons of this process are important elements to scenery and strategies formulations for the development of this crop. The objective of this paper was to analyze the dynamics of barley production in Brazil, regarding its geographical distribution, from 1975 to 2003, through the analysis of descriptive statistics, asymmetry, concentration and location indicators, and maps, based on four years, namely, 1975, 1985, 1995, and 2003. The barley harvested area, the produced quantity and the productivity in Brazil were grown in the period of 1975-2003, were more expressive in the 1970s and the 1980s. It was observed that barley has remained limited to a traditional cropping area, Brazil's Southern region. The most expressive participation in the barley harvested area and the produced quantity was in the Southern region of Paraná state and in the Northern region of Rio Grande do Sul state. During this period, from 8 to 10 micro-regions had represented 75% of the harvested area and the quantity of barley produced. The results had shown that a small group of micro-regions had been responsible for the larger part of the barley production and kept itself stable in the barley crop, and that a numerous group of micro-regions of low expression and inconstant in its barley cultivation. In terms of space, it did not demonstrate a great movement of the pondered distribution of barley cultivation.
